WEB SITES »

Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures :: Wild Dolphin Trips :: Manatee Trips
These web sites are part of Jim Abernethy's Scuba Adventures; the place where I currently work. Some of the writings and photos in the Capt's Blog are put together by me during my daily scuba job adventures. Check them out!

Quiescence Diving Services
The wonderful friends that make up Quiescence Diving Services in Key Largo, FL. are, in part, the catalyst for my love affair with the ocean. If you're ever in the neighborhood I highly recommend you go out diving with them. Tell them Laz & Fritz say hi!

Florida Museum of Natural History - Ichthyology Dept.
The ocean lover's version of the Library of Congress. Whenever I am researching any underwater creature this is the most likely place to find an over abundance of information.

Marine Bio
This organization has put together a plethora of information related to our wonderful oceans. I frequent the pages when I am curious to learn something new about the ocean.

FishBase :: CephBase
This is Xanadu for any fish or Cephalopod nerd! These two sites provide a lot of the taxonomic classification we use throughout this web site. Check out the Ichthyologist course!

Wetpixel :: Digital Diver :: Plankton Forum :: Scuba Board
This group of forums serve as a valuable means of communications with like-minded individuals who just love talking about ocean related subjects and underwater photography. Beware, these sites are whirlpools of time! :)

South Florida Underwater Photography Society
What do you get when you mix more electronic gadgets than what is on the Space Shuttle with a cornucopia of fish stories and a wild group of adventurers?!?! The name says it all; the paparazzi's of the underwater world!

Sea Shepherd :: Blue Voice :: Ocean Conservancy :: Nature Conservancy :: Reef
Without these dedicated men and women (and you, too!) there is no question that the destruction of our natural environments would take place at an uncontrollable rate. Please help these organizations with your support. Remember... Every day is Earth Day!

Project Blue Sphere
A modern age Robinson Crusoe, Alex Dorsey and his wonderful sailboat, Namaste, take me every day on a real life adventure across the great oceans. Read his daily ramblings as he lives the life of a single-handed sailor. I certainly admire Alex for his courage to follow his heart (we all should). One day I hope to follow (some what) in his foot steps. Can you imagine daily updates to TheLivingSea of marine life encounters from around the world? Anybody have a sailboat they want to donate?!?! I'll take care of all the elbow grease! :)

UNDERWATER VIDEOS »

The Blue Planet - Seas of Life
The Holy Grail of all underwater films. This series of films showcase the ocean in all its majesty and splendor. If you have not seen this yet don't wait another minute!

Deep Sea 3D
This wonderful IMAX film by Howard Hall (and friends) gives you an insight to a part of my job. The part of the film that has the sharks and the friendly grouper (Max) was done with Jim Abernethy at the same local watering holes where I work play – Tiger Beach and Carcarius Cut (two dive spots in the Bahamas). Beautiful cinematography!

IMAX Dolphins
Whenever I start to miss my Dolphin friends in the Bahamas I pop in this wonderful film. Until you can go out and enjoy a real-life encounter with wild Dolphins this film is a must have.

Sensational Seas
This collection of films from a variety of underwater cinematographers will have you on the edge of your seat. Rare footage along with some ScubaZoo fun has been mixed together in this wonderful compilation. Best of all, some of it is narrated by the great Stan Waterman. His quick wit and eloquence are worth the price of admission alone.

Cracking the Ocean Code
Here's something a little different... Embark on a quest to map the DNA of every microscopic organism in the ocean with genome pioneer Dr. J. Craig Venter. Using modern science and one very beautiful and gadget-geeked sailboat, Sorcerer II, watch them discover thousands of new species in the world's oceans.

Ocean Wonders
Join Bob Cranston (Howard Hall's right-hand man) as he explores the wonderful world of the Cephalopods — the Octopus, Squids, and Cuttlefish. Learn about the Wonderpus and encounter the giant Humboldt squids. As an extra bonus, this DVD also includes a behind the scenes look at the world's most amazing aquarium — the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

BOOKS »

Sensuous Seas :: Tales of a Marine Biologist
By far my favorite book related to all things marine. Eugene H. Kaplan is the epitome of the perfect professor. Mixing his extremely entertaining sense of humor with some of the ocean's most interesting behaviors, the hours will melt away in laughter and discovery as you read this book time and time again.

The Edge of the Sea
A million words could not describe the writings of Rachael Carson. Reading a single paragraph from this book will leave you hooked, but more importantly it will show you our natural world as you've never seen it before. Rachael Carson's writing is both eloquent and extremely descriptive. This book is a must have!

Ocean :: The World's Last Wilderness Revealed
No book packs so much information about the oceans. From ocean geology and the different ocean environments to the ocean's abundance of marine life, this book is crammed with a plethora of information. A must have for your ocean library (or if you're going on Jeopardy)!

Silent Symphony
A little inspiration goes a long way towards achieving the perfect underwater photograph. From my vast collection of underwater photography books this is one of my favorites. Tony Wu, one of the authors of Silent Symphony, is also a wonderful writer. Make sure you check out some of the writings on his personal web site: Tony-Wu.com

Seasons of the Sea
There is only so much information you can learn about the ocean from scientific knowledge. To learn the inner workings you need to dive head first into the oceans and experience it first hand. Jay Humphreys has done just that with the information you'll learn in this book. Having spent so much of my life underwater I can agree... The oceans, like our natural land, goes through seasons. This wonderful book explores some of Florida's underwater seasons.

Realm of the Pygmy Seahorse
Underwater photography is a perfect balance between knowing your equipment, proper composition, preparation, luck, but importantly, knowing your subject. Few underwater photographers can proudly wear this illustrious belt with confidence, but Constantinos Petrinos is one such photographer. Marrying his skills with his knowledge of his subjects he has produced this spectacular book showcasing the stunning life that exists throughout the Indonesian archipelago — in particular, Lembeh Straits. Aside from all the spectacular underwater photography, this book is littered with an insight into many of the denizens of the underwater world. This book is worth every penny.
